Rotating House
John Kormeling
Tilburg, Netherlands
2008

The work of John Kormeling, an artist and architect, often centers on urban design and the expansion of infrastructure – particularly transportation networks – to accommodate increasing populations. In this piece, Kormeling places a typical Dutch single-family row house unit in the center of an urban rotary.

Rotaries have become increasingly common throughout Western Europe; while they facilitate efficient traffic flow, their proliferation in urban and rural landscapes has also been criticized. “Rotating House” is a humorous response to the rotary – the house rotates on a circular rail system, at times with the flow of traffic and at times surpassing traffic during a red light or traffic jam.
