Reflective City
Michele Adrian

For 10 years, Michele Adrian has photographed the city reflected in the surface of the street. Isolating the image by the size of the puddle, this documentation of the city informs, for a moment, and acute awareness of the city – an awareness through a physical lens in which to see the city.

This layering of physical object with reflection captures a rich story of what is happening in the city at one specific moment in time. Two realities blend into one on a surface that takes you to another dimension. This surface is typically overlooked though, as asphalt – merely a cheap habit of our landscapes.

To bring this level of detail and esthetics into the asphalt process would require more than money; it would require an understanding of asphalt as a material in and of itself boiled down through a lens that brought Adrian’s same type of awareness to the city, layering another level of detail upon it.
