For the majority of the year, when not in use for parking or tailgating, the paved lots of American football stadiums remain empty.  Stadium parking lots in rural and suburban locations spread out like wide moats around the stadium in the center; lots in urban settings are more irregular, taking advantage of empty parcels near the stadium.

Urban squares, used for commercial markets, recreation, and political expression, are comparable open spaces.  Both forms are big enough to accommodate large gatherings.  By considering these stadium lots in their specific context, great potential exists for exploring commercial, social, and political possibilities of these spaces.

These images map the dedicated paved parking for each stadium, revealing common patterns of stadium parking, as well as the potential for the lots to function as flexible gathering spaces.
