Entrelacement
Michel de Broin
Canal Lachine, Montreal
2001

In 2001, Montreal artist Michel de Broin extended a bicycle path that runs alongside the Lachine Canal in Montreal, creating an asphalt knot. De Broin describes this project as “a rupture in the rationality of urban landscaping.”

This ironic play on the expectation that a marked path will clarify circulation is reiterated by the conventional yellow sign that cues the approach to this convoluted route. Much of De Broin’s work involves humorous reinterpretations of common materials and urban forms.
