Asphalt cores display the stratified composition of an application of asphalt. Coarse aggregate layers form the base for a top layer of finer aggregate that fit together to form a tight, smooth surface.
Core samples are critical for evaluating hot asphalt mixes as well as installed asphalt surfaces. These samples may be used to ensure quality control by testing various characteristics of asphalt, including the proportion of bitumen binder to aggregate as well as the percentage of air spaces in an asphalt sample. |
